Brian Berry is an author and an illustrator, and he has always had a morbid fascination with the darker side of humanity. Interested in serial killers from a young age, he learned all that he could about as many of humanity’s monsters as he could find, devouring books, shows and movies.
Now he brings those killers back to life through his art — coloring books for the true crime fanatics of the world. Fourteen of them so far, from the first Bloody Alphabet to the activity books.
No AI, not one page
Every portrait in every book was drawn by hand. The first books were finished before image generators existed, and the newest ones were drawn the same way, on purpose.
It matters because of what coloring is. You follow someone else’s line for hours. A generated drawing falls apart under that kind of attention: hands go wrong, objects melt into each other, detail turns to noise where a line should be. Drawn work holds up, because someone decided where every line went.
How the books are made
Each page starts from the record of a real case — the people, the places, the objects that turn up in the reporting. The portrait goes in the middle, the details of the case around it. Pages are printed single-sided so markers and pens don’t bleed into the drawing behind.
